General Guidelines for testing Self Clinching Fastener performance

 

• The mounting hole must be within the specified tolerance for the fastener.
• Minimum panel thickness limitations should be observed for the fastener.
• The maximum panel hardness must not exceed the specified limit for the part.
• The fastener should be installed as per recommendations.
• Push-Out tests shall be performed with a direction of force opposite to the installation force.
• Push-Out tests shall be performed by inserting a screw into the shank side of the nut and pushing on the screw over an anvil under the panel. The anvil internal diameter must not exceed 1.6mm plus the maximum diameter of the fastener. A pushing force should be directly applied to studs and standoffs from opposite the head.
• Torque-Out tests shall be performed from the body side for nuts and standoffs and the thread side for studs.
• Torque-Through or clamp load testing for studs should be done by stimulating the joint assembly. A hardened washer should be mated against the thread side of the stud - this should be centered on the stud. The washer ID must be equal to the maximum mating hole size as specified for the stud.

The Push-Out and Torque-Out figures obtained by these test procedures pertain to the holding power of the fastener in the sheet only. They do not pertain to the axial strength of the threads, allowable tightening torque or design loadings for the part.
