The lack of a countersink in the anvil causes the panel to buckle when installing into thin panels. This is because the clinch feature actually protudes partly through the panel in thin material. The excess of material during the installation process needs somewhere to go - the countersink allows this material to flow up and around the clinch ring leading to a successful installation.
